"Along with my Socialist colleagues, I voted in favour of the resolution on macro-financial assistance to Ukraine because the Ukrainian economy is experiencing an acute and serious crisis, rooted in long-standing structural problems and aggravated by the armed conflict in the Eastern regions and the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia. After a new government took office in February 2014, its ambitious macroeconomic adjustment and structural reform programme needed to be underpinned by EU macro-financial assistance (MFA) operations.
I visited Ukraine in the years before Maidan, and saw for myself the extreme poverty facing communities. I have continued to maintain contact with Ukrainian civil society organisations, and know how important the relationship with the EU is, socially, economically, and politically."@en1
