"Mr President, I agree with the concept of a minimum wage. I think it is very important, and I am glad that Germany has introduced such a scheme. However, different states have different rates and the cost of the minimum wage in Germany is different to that in Ireland, different to that in the Czech Republic, different to that in Bulgaria. In individual states we have different approaches to wage levels, and indeed to taxation, and the cost of living can vary. I do know – and I do understand – there has been unfair treatment of workers, exploitation of workers, and that should not happen, but we cannot have one country setting itself up as judge and jury in this whole area. I would urge the Commission to do something about this, because in the absence of a policy in this area we get the kind of situation we are discussing now. It is important that this void be filled and it needs to be addressed.
My main concern in this whole issue is that I have been contacted by Irish road haulage operators who are concerned at the level of bureaucracy, the level of red tape, that it will involve for them. It will certainly add to their costs. It will discourage them from crossing Germany. They will maybe seek alternative routes, increasing their costs again and ultimately increasing the cost to the consumer. I think it is important that we have a moratorium while we address this situation, which ultimately has to be decided on an EU—wide basis. I do not think we can have one country dictating how we operate in this area."@en1
