"Mr President, my briefing note from my excellent assistant says in capital letters ‘COMPLEX ISSUE’, and the Commissioner, when she opened the debate, said the legal assessment is complex. You would think from listening to the debate tonight that this was a complex issue – but it is not complex at all. This is an incredibly simple issue. We are asked to believe that unless this measure is contested the haulage industry in north-eastern Europe will collapse under the weight of the costs. But Comrade Liberadzki said in passing that actually the average effective wage for truck drivers in Poland is EUR 8.5 per hour, the cost of these vehicles is EUR 100 000-plus, the diesel costs thousands of pounds and the tolls are hundreds of euros, so the notion that this cost can cripple these industries is ridiculous. The Posting of Workers Directive is clear: you pay the rate for the job in the country where you are doing business."@en1
