"I voted in favour of this resolution because we have the obligation to speak out on any incident in which people have to pay for their political beliefs or activities in defence of human rights with a price that is far too high: their life. We have reason to believe that there is a possibility this might have been the case for Boris Nemtsov. Therefore we demand an independent investigation into his murder that meets international standards. Through this resolution, we are reaching out to thousands of activists in Russia who face repression because they are standing up for what they believe in. At the same time, I find it regrettable that some Groups have been trying to use this resolution to address issues concerning Russia that go beyond the murder of Mr Nemtsov and the issue of repression against democratic activists. At all times it is to remain clear that we are reaching out to the Russian Government to restore relations based on respect for democratic values and the rule of law. But, once again, this will never stop us from speaking out. Boris Nemtsov may have been silenced by an assassin’s bullet, but we will not be silenced."@en1
