"Mr President, a great deal has been achieved in the protection of human rights across the globe since the formation of the UN Human Rights Council. It is right that we celebrate the successes that we have already had. We must however acknowledge that there is still a long way to go.
Throughout the globe there is still areas where severe violations of human rights occur. Indeed it looks like in some ways the West is also moving backwards. In the UK, and in many other areas of Europe, we are being too afraid to stand up for the rights of women and girls, who should be protected from the barbarous act of female genital mutilation, over fears of breaching cultural sensitivities.
Whilst it is right that we look around the world and act through international organisations such as the UN and the very generous act of giving money to charity, it is important we also get our own house in order and to no longer be afraid of speaking out against abuses when they happen within our own borders."@en1
