"Mr President, the ECR supports the continued independent presence of individual Member States at the 28th Session of the United Nation’s Human Rights Council. Although it does accept that collectively the EU plays a very active role in the work of the Council in proposing resolutions and making declarations on the protection and promotion of human rights and freedoms and establishing and developing the system of UN special rapporteurs on human rights issues.
I am proud, personally, to say that my country, the UK, is living up to its commitments to the UN to safeguard fundamental human rights at a time of escalating violence, particularly in the Middle East. ISIS continues to broadcast its acts of horror in Syria, Iraq and Libya, murdering, torturing, raping and even selling children – which was highlighted a few weeks ago by the Committee for the Rights of the Child – as well as mass public beheadings and the burning of people alive in cages.
I would also like to put on the record that the ECR does not support the calls in paragraph 68 of this resolution for the EU to re-engage with item 7 of the HRC which, in our view, unfairly singles out Israel for special discrimination."@en1
