"It is absolutely right that we should come together to discuss ways in which governments across Europe can detect and deter financial crimes across society. Illicit trade, smuggling and laundering - which this report is correct to highlight - are crimes which disproportionately impact my constituency, Northern Ireland, given our unique land border with the Republic of Ireland. And I am delighted to be able to stand before you today in the knowledge that the UK National Crime Agency is now able to operate in Northern Ireland for the betterment of our economy, border communities blighted by these crimes, and our society as a whole. The previous veto on this specialist body working in Northern Ireland was costing the local economy millions of pounds every year - money which lined the pockets of crime gangs with alleged links to republican terrorists. These national authorities should always have primacy to investigate and prosecute these crimes. However, Europe does have a role to play in terms of ensuring that spending under the EU budget is credible, safe and immune from corruption where possible. Only then can any form of value for money be secured."@en1
