"I welcome the continued focus on ensuring that businesses and consumers across Europe are given the opportunity to compete within the Single Market in a way that is fair. In my own constituency, Northern Ireland, enterprises in the construction and quarry sectors were left in a state of limbo as the Commission investigated claims that the UK Aggregates Levy Rebate Scheme may have constituted illegal state aid. While the eventual outcome was a relief to those affected, we must ensure that such a situation never happens again. Better clarity on the rules must be given to remove this risk. I welcome the emphasis placed on enabling greater competition in areas such as the digital market, public procurement and the supply of energy. This is crucial to driving growth, job creation, and benefits for currently disengaged groups of society, including those living in rural areas. I also commend the focus on tackling alleged state aid abuses in sport, and would particularly draw attention to previous cases involving several Spanish clubs and Celtic Football Club. Regardless of the outcomes of these investigations, they have cast a shadow on the nature of financial contributions to clubs within the sport."@en1
