"I gave my support to the Tarabella report, which comes at a time when the advancement of gender equality, one of the EU founding values, is under severe threat. Too little has been done to reach key targets in the EU strategy for equality between women and men 2010-2015. The result is next to no progress on mainstreaming gender into policy-making and budget procedures; weak female participation in the labour market; gaps in the enforcement of the directive on equal opportunities and treatment in employment; and a blocked Maternity Leave Directive. Sadly, the UK Government seems keen to follow the EU trend. In the zero-hour contract economy set up under the current coalition government, a quarter of women are on low pay, while recent changes to legal aid for family law cases risks leaving women who have fallen victim to violence standing in the cold. I hope this report will serve as a wake-up call to the Council and Commission. Because in 2015, equality between men and women should not be an issue that can be put before the ballot. It should be a reality."@en1
