"While there are good elements to this report, they are vastly overshadowed by a desire to violate the fundamental right to life of the unborn child. My opposition to this is not just a moral objection, but also the principle of subsidiarity. The EU has no right to instruct national governments to provide sex education in a certain way or abortion on demand. However, I welcome the focus on tackling violence against women in society, something which affects – or has affected – one in four in my constituency, Northern Ireland. In 30% of these cases, abuse starts during pregnancy, which is shocking. This issue needs to be tackled, and I support making 2016 a European Year for combating this crime. I also support action to end the scourge of female genital mutilation, as well as the desire to see more women equipped with the skills and confidence to enter the labour market, local decision-making or to generally gain a greater stake in society. Many grassroots women’s organisations already carry this work out in Northern Ireland, and I trust that the latest round of ESF funding will respect their importance to local communities."@en1
