"The UK delegation recognises that equality between men and women is essential for the advancement of society as well as contributing to economic prosperity. A just and fair society is one that includes both genders and affords the same rights to girls and boys, men and women. The UK delegation strongly believes that men and women should be paid equally for work of equal value; we strongly believe that women should have the same opportunities as men when it comes to working in male dominated fields such as engineering, science and technology. The UK delegation condemns violence against women and we have continued to speak out against FGM. The UK delegation has always supported legislative directives aimed at strengthening and protecting women’s rights (European Protection Order, Combating Human Trafficking and Victim's Rights Package) and we have a track record of supporting the Daphne programme which tackles domestic violence at grass- roots level. However, the Conservatives in the European Parliament want to see decisions made as close as possible to people and we are concerned that this report goes way beyond this Parliament’s competencies. This report extends into areas such as public procurement tenders, taxation, childcare, free healthcare, maternity and paternity leave, family reunification, sex education, abortion, gender quotas for women on company boards and political party lists and even housework."@en1
