"I voted in favour of this report. This report is concerned with the re-integration into the labour market of an estimated 257 workers who have been made redundant in the automotive safety glass sector.
This is a particularly important issue for me as only recently in my own constituency and my home town of Carrickmacross, 140 workers were made redundant from our local Bose factory. This has had a devastating effect on the workers, their families and the wider community as a whole. We do not yet know if an application for funding from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund will be made in this instance but adequate support for the workers in retraining and upskilling must be provided in any case.
The Fund plays a vital role in ameliorating what is a very distressing situation for workers who have found their whole livelihoods placed into disarray. In what is often a very harrowing situation, it is important to focus on the positive and constructive options which are available. However, I would like to add a general qualification that no government should use this fund as a justification for making workers redundant."@en1
