"In order to protect the safety and health of my London constituents, it is important that we utilise the technological developments available to us in order to create safer road traffic vehicles. Developing safer road traffic vehicles will reduce the risk of death and injury to cyclists and pedestrians. Thus, I am happy that the proposal amending the existing Directive on the maximum authorised weights and dimensions of road traffic vehicles has passed. I am also pleased with the fact that the important political objectives I felt were necessary to protect the safety of UK citizens were included in the final piece of legislation. First, it was vital that the UK is allowed to retain the right to veto the entry of so-called ʽmegatrucksʼ onto British roads. Secondly, I am proud we were successful in retaining the existing rights of trucks higher than 4 metres to operate between the UK and the Republic of Ireland. The acceptance of these UK objectives into the amendment shows that the EU views the UK as an important member whose concerns it takes seriously. I am delighted that Parliament has listened to, acknowledged, and accepted the worries my nation had about this proposal, and allowed the UK to protect itself from these worries"@en1
