"Mr President, two days ago Kluiver Roa was just a young, fourteen-year-old Venezuelan boy from the city of San Cristobal. Yesterday, while protesting against a corrupt government and a worsening economy, he was brutally shot dead by the police, and my condolences go to his family. President Maduro had the audacity last year to blame the deaths of 43 protestors on hatred of the government and last week unjustly arrested the Mayor of Caracas, Antonio Ledezma, charging him with plotting to overthrow the government, and there are several other opposition politicians also jailed for similar reasons. The people of Venezuela and the media are being oppressed by Maduro’s government; their basic human rights are being impinged on. The European Union does have a duty to stand up for Venezuelan democracy – or what is left of it. The rise of the far left Chavismo model based on the rotten, discredited Cuban Castro Communist dictatorship model is a threat, in my view and my group’s, to the whole of Latin America."@en1
