The Committee on Missing Persons established 34 years ago has to date identified 568 victims from both communities. In an attempt to bring some degree of closure to relatives, friends and the communities of the 1 433 missing Cypriots from both sides of the island, might I respectfully suggest that the time has come for a fresh approach to this tragic issue. I believe that Cyprus needs to follow the brave South African example at the end of the apartheid regime by setting up a truly independent truth and reconciliation commission. As time goes by, the important question surrounding the fates and final resting places of so many victims must be addressed. Might this be an option worth investigating through the usual diplomatic channels whilst those witnesses are still able to give answers ..."@en1
