"Mr President, there are many similarities between Cyprus and Ireland: both are island nations that suffer from the legacy of partition, foreign occupation and conflict. Therefore, truth and reconciliation is as important to Cyprus as it is in Ireland. The European Court of Human Rights, in its judgment with regard to missing persons in Cyprus, held that the Turkish authorities failed to conduct an effective investigation, in violation of Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights. Similarly, the British Government also continues to violate Article 2 in relation to state killings in the north of Ireland, for example with regard to its involvement in the murder of the brilliant 39-year-old lawyer Pat Finucane, the 26 anniversary of whose death occurs today. For reconciliation to take place in Cyprus, Turkey must reveal the truth about the missing people and in relation to the further crime of the relocation of victims’ remains by the Turkish authorities.
