"The recent horsemeat scandal served to damage consumer trust in the meat sector. Whilst country of origin labelling for processed meat used as an ingredient would not have prevented such fraud, the scandal has nonetheless generated greater consumer interest in, and awareness of, the origin of meat and meat products. As policy-makers we need to take action to meet the expectations of today’s consumers. Introducing mandatory country of origin labelling for meat used as an ingredient would therefore constitute an important step towards rebuilding consumer confidence in the meat sector, and would enable consumers to exercise their desire to make more informed choices. For these reasons I supported today's resolution calling for the European Commission to bring forward proposals in this respect. Any future proposal must naturally seek to minimise the possible cost burdens on producers and consumers, and I would welcome additional assessments from the Commission on how this could be implemented proportionately and cost-effectively."@en1
