"Mr President, I supported the proposal for mandatory country-of-origin labelling for meat in processed food because, as many other speakers have said, research has proven that EU consumers want access to this information. This is also important for farmers in countries like my own – Ireland – who deserve to have their produce recognised but who also need the protection of law, ensuring that companies cannot label products for example as being Irish when in fact they are not. The Bord Bia voluntary labelling scheme in Ireland already includes meat in processed meals and this scheme has had a huge uptake with almost 40 000 producers and 122 processors currently involved. It is clear that this is not just what consumers want but it is also what is in the best interests of farmers and businesses."@en1
