"Mr President, I voted in favour of this resolution on country-of-origin labelling. I have to say that I am mindful of the arguments that people put about over-regulation and the additional cost that could follow from such an initiative, but I think the arguments that the consumer makes win out over any potential difficulty that could emerge in terms of additional cost or more regulation. This proposal has been in the offing now since 2011 and, as the previous speaker said, the horsemeat scandal in 2013 is an example of where the internal market was used for financial gain, for processors to effectively sell something that was not there for their own financial end.
I believe consumers have rights here. I believe people want to know where their food comes from. I think it is in the interests of countries like my own, which have a hugely significant agri-foods industry, that we move in this direction. I very much hope that the Commission takes note of this resolution and takes note of the strong consumer sentiment that supports information such as this, so that we can have a sustainable food system, not just in Europe but throughout the world – and also a sustainable food system that people have certainty about, in terms of knowing where their food comes from."@en1
