"An EU PNR scheme can be useful but it must be very clear in its scope and purpose and meet stringent data protection standards. When collecting passenger name records, we must be very careful to safeguard the protection of our citizens’ fundamental rights.
The Commission has so far failed to present us with a satisfactory explanation of how these records can be used to detect and prevent terrorism and serious cross-border crime, and of how it will ensure that they will be used for these purposes only.
We must also keep in mind that we will be processing wholesale information pertaining to absolutely everyone who flies into Europe, an overwhelming majority of whom are innocent people whose privacy rights must be taken into consideration."@en1
