"Mr President, one of the arguments that is often put in my country, as in others, about participation in the EU is that we need to be present at the top tables. But, as we see with international regulations of this kind, the top tables are no longer in Europe. We are talking here about conventions on child abduction, but the same is true about internet regulation, about food standards and so on. The top tables are international; they are global. And what happens as a result of EU membership is that the European Commission takes over representation from the Member States. So whereas Norway and Switzerland and New Zealand and other countries sit independently around those global tables we are represented by somebody else, along with 27 other member governments. In other words, we make a net loss of collective influence and the reason that we cannot see it is because we still fondly imagine that the whole world is focused in Europe. Well guys, take a look at what is happening in the world economy. This is not the centre anymore."@en1
