"Mr President, UNRWA has called on the EU to make an extraordinary contribution and my Group says we should, to an organisation which is itself extraordinary. I share the concern of some of those in this Chamber that we are simply paying the price of the Gaza conflict, but with 8 000 families still waiting for the first instalment to repair their damaged homes it is they who have paid most of all. With 90% of Palestinian refugees in Gaza and in Syria reliant on UNRWA for their survival, there is an overwhelming humanitarian imperative for us to help. I heard only yesterday that the UNWRA girls’ school in Ramallah is concerned for their future. And yes, of course we have to deal with the root causes, but let us accept that our own failure in being able to help do so means that we have an obligation to help. Since 2013, European Commission aid to UNRWA has already reduced from EUR 190 million to EUR 120 million. Today UNRWA has the highest deficit since it was first established in 1949. Let us make an extraordinary contribution to that extraordinary organisation."@en1
