"Mr President, in Ireland last week we heard that youth unemployment is once again on the rise. Coupled with the mass emigration of over 160 000 youths since the crash, a lost generation of young people is being created. The European Union’s attempt to address these devastating levels of youth unemployment across Europe has been marred by a lack of ambition, funds and understanding. The EUR 6 billion allocated to the Youth Guarantee is a mere drop in the ocean. If Europe’s leaders were less concerned with making themselves look good and more serious about getting young people into work, they would have created a properly funded scheme of at least EUR 21 billion, as recommended by the ILO. As it is, the scheme is simply once again paying lip service to our jobless youths. Yes, the Commission should frontload the EUR 1 billion but, without a well-funded system in place, young people are once again being offered overall an empty promise and not a guarantee of proper employment."@en1
