"Madam President, I welcome the efforts of colleagues who have secured the debate today. When the ILO is in crisis, it shows multilateralism is in crisis and widespread concerns over TTIP show that EU citizens do not want a global economy without fair social rules. Global free trade without effective labour rights, including the right to strike, effectively means more downward pressure on wages and unsustainable development for the many. But the Commission also has a special responsibility to ensure that the ILO functions properly. The Commission has outsourced to the ILO the assessment of whether a country qualifies for trade preferences with respect to labour rights. The Commission chose to rely on the ILO’s Committee on the Application of Standards. We therefore have a duty to guarantee that this Committee can function properly and delivers effectively. The conflict within the ILO must be resolved urgently and it must be resolved, if necessary, by the ICJ."@en1
