"Mr President, can I just say that I do not quite see this debate as it has been framed by many here this evening, that is about it being industry versus consumers. I do not think it is as black and white as that. I also do not think it is any surprise that when we ask consumers if they want the country of origin labelling they will say yes, and I do not think it is any surprise that they are not prepared to pay more for it, but in my view this debate should be much more about the sustainability of the food supply chain.
In my view, reputable food producers, whether of products with processed meats or otherwise, have sustainable long-term relationships with their suppliers and therefore should not have the need to switch and swap between those suppliers. That is how I come to this debate. I am torn between the debate about what consumers want and what they are prepared to pay for. I do not see this on the Commission’s work programme for this year. I think it requires more debate but I would ask us to do it in the context of the sustainability of the food supply chain, above all else, and having these long-term supplier relationships.
Lastly, can I say that on the issue of fraud you can stick on a fraudulent label. The issue of food fraud will only be tackled when we monitor and control the food supply chain adequately."@en1
