"I strongly support the inclusion of the air and waste packages in the WP and voted as such in the specific votes today (paragraphs 16, 18, 21(1), 9(1) and 23). Air quality in particular is a hugely important issue for European citizens, and we cannot underestimate the benefits, both for the health of our nations and to the wider environment, that would be found with improved legislation in this area. Better regulation is of the utmost importance, and I welcome the Commission’s quest to weed out legislation that is ineffectual, intractable or just plain bad. It is, however, imperative that we do not sacrifice the potential benefits by scrapping legislation with potential in such a wholesale manner. I am confident that on the Air Quality Package the co-legislators can come up with a solution that delivers real value here without imposing unnecessary burdens on industry or Member States."@en1
