"I abstained on this motion for a resolution on Egypt. I was disappointed that reference to the case of Ibrahim Halawa was not included in the joint motion. Sinn Féin was successful in including his case in the GUE/NGL resolution and it is regrettable that the joint motion does not mention him. As a prisoner of conscience who was imprisoned as a child following protests in August 2013, his case is an important example of the brutal repression of human rights, including the freedom of expression. I also regret that there was an emphasis on Egypt as a strategic partner for trade and security for the European Union. Relations between the EU and third countries should not be predicated on trade issues – Egypt’s citizens are currently experiencing severe repression of their democratic rights to freedom of expression, speech and association. Concern for the violation of their democratic rights should not be diluted by mentioning trade concerns."@en1
