"I voted in favour of the Walesa report because I believe the Ombudsman plays a vital role in bringing the EU closer to its citizens by acting as a guardian for transparency, good administration and quality democracy.
Recent statistics show that the number of UK citizens who feel positive towards the EU has risen to 52%. Now we need to pull the other 48% aboard, and we will only succeed if citizens are genuinely enabled to be part of the European project.
I therefore deeply welcome the Ombudsman inquiry into the implementation of the European Citizens’ Initiative, a tool launched in 2012 to increase citizens’ direct involvement in the EU decision-making process, to make sure it is working to full potential.
Her decision to investigate transparency in the TTIP negotiations – an issue on which constituents write to me on a daily basis – moreover proves that the Ombudsman is serious about addressing issues citizens are truly concerned about.
However, these actions will only make a difference if the Ombudsman’s recommendations are acted upon swiftly and decisively. Together with colleagues, I intend to make sure this message is heard loud and clear by every single institution and agency working for the EU."@en1
