"Despite having some concerns I voted in favour of the Ombudsman’s annual report 2013 as I recognise the fantastic work that Emily O’Reilly has carried out in her role as Ombudsman, and so as to place on record my full support and confidence in her for the time ahead. I agreed with this report in the sense that it stressed the importance of transparency and good administration for the EU institutions. These principles should always be an absolute priority. It was worrying to note that 64.3% of the complaints received by her office concerned the European Commission. I thought the rapporteur’s approach in relation to this was soft and found that he was trying to justify the number of complaints received. A strong line should have been taken against the actions of the European Commission. I also believe that it was pretty weak on certain aspects, in particular as concerns Frontex and TTIP. In addition to this, there is little mention made of the ‘revolving door’ and cases of conflict of interest within the European Institutions. The ‘revolving door’ practices in the European Commission should absolutely be denounced, as should the lack of transparency and public participation in the TTIP negotiations."@en1
