"Mr President, like my colleague Matt Carthy, I also want to congratulate Emily O’Reilly on her first annual report, and indeed on her very positive start to her tenure in office. There are many issues raised in the report, but because of time constraints I will only deal with one. I support Amendment 3, which raised the importance of resources, both for the Committee on Petitions and for the Ombudsman’s Office. The number of petitions continues to increase, as indeed do the queries to the Ombudsman’s Office. I believe that citizens look to the Ombudsman’s Office and the Petitions Committee as their conduit to the EU institutions. It is hugely important that any queries or petitions or investigations are conducted in a timely and efficient manner. In order to do that, adequate resources are required. So in my view it is a crucial issue, because a smoothly-functioning Ombudsman’s Office and Petitions Committee help create a much more positive image for the institutions."@en1
