"Mr President, this directive has been stuck in the Council since 2013. Just why are we still waiting for constructive dialogue to make progress? Just what are they scared of? One can only wonder. But we have actually come a long way on gender quality in the EU. We tend to move in fits and starts, but we are moving forward. In the UK a report last year highlighted real progress. Women now account for just over 20% of non-executive board positions on the FTSE 100 – and yes, shockingly, we still think that 20% is progress. The disparity on company boards is undeniable and there is no justification. The increase in the number of women on boards is much, much too slow. The absence of women in leadership positions creates a vicious circle. The lack of women as role models reinforces the belief that women simply cannot make it in the corporate world. This House is testament to the fact that it is not true. Commissioner Jurová, I was delighted to hear that this directive on women on boards was one of your main priorities. I urge you and the Council to keep the discussions moving forward on this essential topic. That way we can make full use of everyone’s talent, regardless of their gender."@en1
