"Madam President, one of the questions I often ask myself in deciding how to vote is whether my vote will improve the current situation. I believe that my vote today in favour of this report is a positive step.
The current situation, where Member States can be sued by multinationals if they ban approved GMs, is totally unacceptable. Before today’s vote the Commission could approve GM crops even though a majority of Member States disagreed. We had the case where 19 Member States rejected the Commission proposal to approve the cultivation of a particular type of GM maize, Pioneer 1507, yet it was approved, leaving Member States open to being sued. Now, however, we have the opportunity for Member States to take those decisions individually. Ireland can take the decision to ban GMs, even though the Commission might approve their use, and this is surely the most democratic outcome. After today’s vote, Irish citizens can hold an Irish agriculture minister to account for decisions on GM cultivation. I think this is a situation which the vast majority will support."@en1
