"Mr President, I would like to take this opportunity to urge the Obama Administration to open a dialogue with Venezuela, just as it has in the case of Cuba. Let us remove the excuses and alibis of the regime in Venezuela, which they use to curtail the freedom of the press, rig elections, prevent true democracy and carry out other repressions. Venezuela has to realise that it can no longer sustain the economy because, world-wide, the price of oil is in free-fall. It is expecting 60% inflation this year. It can no longer afford the generous welfare benefits it has promised its citizens. The US has to realise, as it has done with Cuba, that it cannot – and must not – suppress the aspirations of another sovereign state. I wish to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the Members here."@en1
