"I voted today against an overall EU budget which failed to include sufficient reallocation of funds away from unreformed areas like the CAP and Strasbourg sessions. When working people, pensioners and the unemployed are under more financial pressure than ever, the EU budget must be prudent and reduce spending which is not targeted at producing sustainable growth and jobs.
Equally, we must use European funds to develop the technologies of the future. So today I also voted to protect EU research funding. The EU research budget has been particularly productive in the UK. The UK has received EUR 4.8 billion over the last 7 years from the EU research budget – more per capita than any country except the Netherlands. In the South-East of England, EU research funds and European partnerships have produced ground-breaking research, such as the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy which is exploring how to deliver carbon-free energy, and the University of Kent’s INTERLINK project to improve long-term care for older people.
It is disappointing that the UK Government failed to support proposed rises in EU research funding in the Council, whilst equally failing to secure a more prudent approach in relation to areas like the CAP."@en1
