"I voted in favour of this resolution which rejects the Commission's weak draft regulation relating to fair conditions of competition for the road transport internal market. Ireland is a small island nation, in which companies are forced to operate within two economic jurisdictions due to an enforced border. The Westminster government has imposed a HGV levy which seeks to implement a charge on all Heavy Goods vehicles that cross the Irish border in what is an unfair and unworkable barrier for businesses that operate on a cross border basis. Sinn Féin has resisted the introduction of this levy since its inception. We have raised serious concerns about the deeply negative impact that it will have on cross-border and island-wide trade, which currently accounts for £2.3 billion in economic activity per annum. The levy hurts businesses north and south. Any legislation emanating from the commission should prevent member governments from implementing such measures."@en1
