"Mr President, I voted in favour of the 2015 budget and, like many in this Parliament, of course I would prefer a bigger budget but we have to remember it is taxpayers’ money. I voted against Amendment 4, which asked to at least double the current amounts. This is to be achieved by raising the contributions of those Member States with the highest GNI or GDP. But Ireland, a country which is burdened by debt, has the sixth highest in the EU of 28. We simply could not afford to increase our contributions to the budget so we have to be careful what we are asking for here. I also voted against Amendment 5 because, while we do need to do more to support Member States, we already do so through cohesion and CAP funds, the Social Fund and Horizon 2020. That is all we can do on the budget, unless of course we decrease the amount in some of those funds. I think, as many speakers have said, we need to look at how well we spend our money, how efficiently we spend our money, instead of constantly asking citizens for more. Very often, and indeed in nearly all cases, citizens cannot afford it."@en1
