"Mr President, like people on all sides of this Chamber, I am in favour of any measures that strengthen the sovereignty of Moldova and the western orientation of the Bessarabian people, but there is another issue here that goes beyond the political one. We are now extending the common market to the sparse and under-developed farmland on the banks of the Dniestr. I hope this will at last help people to understand the difference between membership of the European Union and free trade with the European Union. The two issues are repeatedly conflated, not least in my own country, with the implication being that you cannot have access to European markets unless you are part of the political structures in Brussels. As we now know, virtually every country in Europe, Macedonia, the Channel Islands, Norway, Lichtenstein, Andorra are all part of a European market without needing to be part of the European Union. The idea that Britain alone would be the only country not to enjoy unrestricted trade with the EU in the event of our non-membership is a fantasy."@en1
