"Madam President, we talk a lot about figures in our budget discussions, but sometimes we forget what the money is used for. I refer particularly to those beneficiaries of EU investments. We all know examples of beneficiaries of structural funds and agricultural funding, but I wanted to say a few words on investments in our universities. In Wales, for example, we recently had announcements of GBP 750 million for a second campus at Swansea University, GBP 45 million for Bangor University, and GBP 20 million for Aberystwyth University – all projects which would not happen without EU investment. That is why I can say that not all parts of the UK are anti-EU. We see the benefits of it. I would hope that everybody in this Chamber would recognise the importance of us investing in innovation, research and development, particularly in our academic institutions. It is so important for the future of our economies. To do that, of course, we need an EU budget which is adequate, but also one which focuses on the things that produce jobs and growth."@en1
