"Madam President, I support the accession of the EU to the CITES Convention. Currently, all 28 Member States are already signed up, so one might wonder what the EU accession adds. What value do we get out of being signed up altogether, rather than separately? I have never attended a CITES meeting, but I understand that the EU Member States do not always speak with one voice; that they sometimes take quite different positions despite the fact that they are all signed up to the same Convention. This will give us the opportunity to negotiate the EU position first, and we would be in the position then to fight very much at the weight we are, that is, representing all the citizens of Europe in this very important issue. The trade in exotic species is estimated to be the third biggest illegal trade, following those in drugs and humans, and it is therefore vitally important that the EU stand together to fight."@en1
