"Madam President, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora is a major international instrument and this motion allows the EU to become part of that. The primary aim of the Convention is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival. This trade and associated levels of exploitation of some animal and plant species is capable of heavily depleting their populations and even bringing some species close to extinction.
Because the trade in wild animals and plants crosses borders between countries, the effort to regulate it requires international cooperation to safeguard certain species from over-exploitation. As well as associated cruelty and loss of national heritage, decreased biodiversity, however it occurs, has a knock-on impact on people and industries around the globe and cannot be taken too seriously. The Sinn Féin MEPs supported this resolution."@en1
