"I voted in favour of Emily O’Reilly for re-election to the role of European Ombudsman. I was pleased to be one of the many MEPs to sign her nomination. It is evident by the fact that Ms O’Reilly was unopposed for this position that, in her relatively short period in the job, she has earned the good will and esteem of those of every political persuasion. As Ireland’s Ombudsman from 2003 and in the office of European Ombudsman since 2013 Emily O’Reilly has won the confidence of ordinary citizens as someone who is ‘on their side’. She has a big challenge ahead of her. The European institutions have lost the confidence of citizens and communities across many Member States. In many cases the manner in which the Council and Commission carry out their roles in secrecy, without transparency and with minimal public consultation, exacerbates this loss of confidence. The European Ombudsman has the responsibility to challenge these cultures within the European institutions. I am extremely hopeful that Emily O’Reilly will be up to that job."@en1
