"I think that monetary union between a small number of Member States who had converged economies – for example Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Finland – could have been a success. The problem is that the euro was set up as a political project instead of as an economic project. If it is going to work, then you either have to let those states that cannot keep up with the Deutschmark, such as Cyprus and Greece, go in an organised manner, or rich countries are going to have to pay them very large sums of money, as happens in the United States. It is one or the other. Mr Dombrovskis does not wish to discuss either of those two solutions."@en1
