"Mr President, I want to welcome this resolution – this report – and to congratulate Mrs McAvan for this work. I think it is important to recognise that we have seen significant progress in the area of malnutrition in the course of the last number of years and, as we go into next year – 2015 – not just in terms of the Millennium Goals but also in terms of the focus in the European Union for the European Year of Development, we need to prioritise this issue to make sure that there is a strong focus within the Commission, within Parliament, on making sure we make progress. As other colleagues have said, every single day, 22 000 children die of malnutrition, and 90% of those deaths are within Asia and Africa. Every single death is preventable, and I think we need to ensure that the political will is in place to resolve this issue once and for all. Colleagues have spoken about the need to support farmers in the developing world, to make sure that they have the right equipment, the right technology, to make sure they have support. We have also spoken about the need to improve diet, to make sure that there is a sustainable food supply. We have also spoken about the need to ensure that discrimination, especially discrimination against women, is tackled within the developing world, and the position of women in terms of education at home and in the workplace also needs to be tackled. We also have to encourage greater use of breastfeeding to avoid contaminated water; and I think, crucially, a plan needs to be built around a child’s first 1 000 days, which other people have spoken about. The first two years are crucial in terms of getting on top of the problem of malnutrition. I think tackling food price volatility and food price security is another issue that we need to address. Even though progress has been made, much more can be done, and if we resolve to do this together, working with other partners throughout the world, I believe that we can address this even further."@en1
