"I welcome this resolution and am delighted that Parliament is sending a delegation to the Lima COP and is putting in so much effort, together with the Commission, to ensure that a truly global legally-binding agreement is achieved in Paris at the end of 2015. It is imperative to limit global temperature rise to below 2°C, the impact of climate change is real, not only on humans but also on the planetʼs fragile biodiversity. Just last year the south of the UK was severely affected by flooding, costing the country an estimated GBP 1 billion. Today the UK Environment Agency estimates that one sixth of houses in England are at risk of flooding. But right across the world, not only in the UK, many nations are struggling to cope with the effects of climate change. This is why I welcome the fact that this resolution reiterates the EUʼs and Member Statesʼ commitment to funding the UN Green Climate Fund by 2020. Such a fund will help developing countries adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. Finally I would like to wish Parliamentʼs delegation all the best at the COP in Lima and truly hope that significant international progress can be achieved."@en1
