"Mr President, I applaud the fact that the final text of this 2020 Strategy includes important references to the creation of quality jobs, policies focused on growth instead of austerity, the fight against precarious employment and the inclusion of national parliaments and social partners in decision-making, and stronger language on the eradication of child poverty. I believe it is crucial that the resolution calls for employment and social considerations to be assigned finally to their proper place, which is on a par with economic and fiscal governance. But words are not enough. In my region of the West Midlands, employment rates have improved, but they are still extremely high. Eight per cent of the people are still out of a job. Meanwhile, wages growth has dropped to just 0.7%, meaning that those with a job are not necessarily guaranteed to meet their basic needs. We will only be able to substantially reduce the number of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion if we make targets binding and ensure that they are closely monitored."@en1
