"Madam President, I want to deal briefly with the very significant problem of cigarette smuggling, which is a real issue across the European Union. It is estimated that EUR 10 billion is lost annually. It is reckoned also that 11% of all cigarettes sold in the EU are illegal. In my own country, Ireland, the figure is about 13%. I want to praise the recent action by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) in an operation called Replica, which, in October this year, seized 130 million cigarettes on their way to my country and other countries. What I am looking for this evening is a commitment to much greater cooperation and integration between OLAF, the Europe-wide anti-smuggling agency, the national coastguards and also the customs and revenue services in the various Member States. We need our role here to be more integrated to make sure that we do much more to stop the smuggling of cigarettes."@en1
