"The North West region of England benefits from millions of pounds in European funding which goes to support projects around the region; the next round of European Structural and Investment Funds is worth more than £1,132m to my region between now and 2020. These projects create jobs and grow our economy. However, I am extremely concerned that by scrapping Regional Development Agencies, and putting in place 39 Local Economic Partnerships (LEPs), which are not democratically accountable, the UK Government has put the region's funds at risk as the role of LEPs has not been adequately explained to the European Commission and they have not been proven as fit for purpose to oversee and dispense European funding. Any gap in funding as a result could have a serious and negative effect on excellent projects across my region. European money has been key in ensuring the development of my region and I do not wish to see any delays in this vital investment. I urge the UK Government and the Commission to agree the programme for funding as quickly as possible."@en1
