"Mr President, as this Parliament’s long-standing rapporteur on corporate responsibility, I had the huge privilege of being part of the European delegation at the Rio+20 summit for sustainable development and there, with many others, put the argument about the green economy – that capital accounting should be reflected in national economic accounts, something which was pioneered by the United Nations Environment Programme – and advanced the argument, in common with many from within the business community, that that should apply to companies as well in terms of sustainability reporting within their own accounts.
We made huge progress at Rio. The global corporate sustainability reporting coalition pushed this agenda. It was not us politicians; it was not NGOs and trade unions; it was investors, 77 of them, representing some two trillion dollars of assets under management. We got paragraph 47, encouraging sustainablity reporting, but now I see the outcome document of the open working group in what is prepared for next year in the UN, and it simply, once again, says: encourage sustainability reporting by business. We pushed that agenda in Rio. I appeal to the Commissioner to push and adopt this agenda. Business wants us to do it. We cannot get sustainable development without business itself being sustainable. France and Denmark, two of our Member States, have been friends of paragraph 47, the paragraph in that previous outcome document. Let us build on what they are doing and let us give European support; and, if we do so, companies will, as we have done within Europe within our non-financial reporting directive, adopt these practices. But we do not just want to see it happening in Europe; we want to see it happening in the world."@en1
