"Mr President, recently, in all weather, nearly a quarter of a million people took to the streets across Ireland to protest at the privatisation of our water and to protect the public supply for future generations. This latest tax on the Irish people was expected to raise around EUR 0.5 billion in 2015. At the same time, between now and 2032, the Irish Central Bank will take in and destroy EUR 28 billion. That is enough to build a state-of-the-art water supply system, but instead, at the behest of the ECB, this broke country borrows billions to destroy in order to pay for the legacy of bailing out the European banking system. Today in this Chamber we celebrated the fall of that wall in Berlin, but let us also recognise that there is a new wall – an even higher and an even longer wall – which is the wall between those who have and those who have not, the wall built and reinforced by the likes of Jean-Claude Juncker. The Irish people have suffered enough at this stage. We have sacrificed enough. I am now asking for the support of the supposed solidarity that we have in the European Union to destroy these odious promissory notes. We would like to do it with you, but we will do it on our own if we have to. That is all I have to say."@en1
