"I was delighted to vote in favour of this motion for a resolution, securing decent working-time rules for those working on passenger and cargo ships in inland waterways. Inland waterway transport is an important economic sector within which around 10 000 companies across the European Union operate, and it is generally quiet and energy-efficient.
We as MEPs have a duty to defend all workers, and this measure proves that it is possible to protect workers with irregular or atypical working hours, without opting out of the Working Time Directive entirely.
I am particularly pleased to support the measure given that it is the result of a social partner agreement between employers and workersʼ unions. By engaging in constructive social dialogue, inland waterways employers have recognised the fact that fair working conditions and adequate rest are essential to productive operations. And by negotiating effectively, the European Transport Workersʼ Federation has demonstrated that there is no reason for inland waterway workers to be deprived of basic protections, including limits on working time, rights to rest periods, and night work restrictions.
I hope that those who claim that a blanket opt-out of the Working Time Directive is necessary will rethink their position following this excellent result."@en1
